The True name of God
There is much debate on the correct name of God. So what’s the truth? Is it Yahweh, Yeshua or Jesus?
What’s more important is having first-hand experience of knowing God as Yaweh and savior.
Yahweh is the covenant name of God. Moses was instructed to tell Israel this name as their token and promise of deliverance from slavery in Egypt which is a symbol of slavery to sin.
Yahweh has the connotation that God was, is, and will be. There is no beginning or end to Him. He’s the great I AM. He’s our all in all. The name Yahweh represents the fullness of who God is. All of his attributes, his character, and everything he is all summed up in this one name.
God’s plan was to progressively reveal his name to Israel .
“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” John 17:3
“And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.” Psalms 9:10
At Mount Sinai, the Lord wanted them to understand that he wanted a all-inclusive relationship with them, being the source of all their needs and their total security. Their righteousness, their wisdom, their comfort and guidance, their everything!
This wasn’t a slave-master type of relationship that they were used to in Egypt. God wanted to be their all in all because he alone could genuinely provide for all their needs in the way that was most beneficial to them. He desired to bring them to a place of abundance and wholeness being complete in him which would give them external and internal peace.
To reveal his name to them progressively, he led them through the wilderness of sin.
He would demonstrate through firsthand experience the truth of his Covenant love of being their all-sufficient source, so they would exclusively put their faith in him and rely on him to meet their needs.
We sin because we’re trying to get our needs met. In essence, sinning is a faulty attempt at regaining wholeness. We won’t feel compelled to sin when we are adequately getting our needs met by God.
Life Application
I encourage you to read Psalm 92 which talks about God’s morning love and evening faithfulness. Try to be mindful and take notes about God’s love for you and then at the end of the day it would be a beneficial practice to be mindful of God’s faithfulness and review who he was to you today. Was he Jehovah Jireh, which means the Lord will provide? Was he El Roi, the God who sees me? Was he Jehovah Raah, the Lord my shepherd? Was He Jehovah Shalom, the Lord my peace?
On a funny note, I have to tell you how God came through for me today as I was writing this piece. I was printing some papers, and eek! Paper jam! I was getting frustrated, trying to get the paper jam out but then came that still small voice. God reminded me to look and live. Redirect my attention from my problem to my problem solver! So I went to the throne of grace and asked God for patience and guidance. If I had put my pride aside to begin with I would have saved myself 5 minutes of frustration. After I went to the throne of grace asking God for help, not even 30 seconds later the problem was fixed. God gave me the patience I needed so I could think straight and wisdom and guidance to get the paper out. God desires to be our help even in the most minute and trivial moments of our lives!
